PPP/C Presidential candidate – Bharrat Jagdeo

The People’s Progressive Party/Civic’s (PPP/C) Presidential candidate Bharrat Jagdeo, said his government’s thrust to promote development and modernisation is not confined to the capital, but is being extended throughout the nation to benefit all Guyanese.

He was at the time addressing a crowd of over 20,000 persons gathered for the official launch of the PPP/C’s 2006 political campaign, at Albion, East Berbice, Correntyne, Region Six.

The event was attended by Cabinet members, serving officials, new candidates and residents from as far as Orealla and Mara, who refused to be discouraged by extreme weather conditions which pervaded most of the day.

The President disclosed that more than US$230M is being spent on a number of developmental projects in the Region for 2006, significant among which are the Skeldon Modernisation Project (US$160M), road repairs (US$30M) and a US$40M bridge linking East and West Berbice.

He noted that “There has not been a single time in our history from the beginning of this country when so much money was spent in a single year in Berbice”.In addition to the three major projects a number of other developmental initiatives are being undertaken in the region, he said. These include 81 roads being constructed in New Amsterdam, Rosehall and Corriverton as part of the township upgrade programme.

The Port Mourant Ophthalmology Centre, Upper-Corentyne Technical Institute and the Tain Campus expansion programme are also among other initiatives being undertaken in the Region.

He added that millions more are being spent on Black Bush Polder road structures and the road to Mara.

The Presidential candidate said $800M is currently being spent on electrification expansion throughout Berbice, and an additional $1.2B is scheduled to be expended on a modern water treatment facility at Skeldon before the end of the year.

Prime Ministerial candidate Samuel Hinds said that among the major achievements of the PPP/C during the last few terms was dispelling myths of discrimination by the administration.

He said that under the previous government many communities were omitted from electrification and other infrastructural development programmes as a result of failing to support the then incumbent party.

Information Liaison to the President Robert Persaud highlighted that one of the significant features of the PPP/C is a fully representative party with membership transcending ethnic, gender and age borders.

This he said will see a fusion of youth and experience which will provide quality leadership which characterises the PPP/C.

Minister of Health Dr. Leslie Ramsammy added that government’s vision for transformed health care delivery is currently being manifested in the construction and upgrade of nine healthcare facilities countrywide.

Among these are the Lethem Hospital, Mackenzie Hospital Complex and the Diagnostic and Treatment Centre at Diamond, East Bank Demerara.

He referred to the Ophthalmology Centre which is soon to be constructed and recently constructed New Amsterdam Hospital which has brought improved healthcare to the people of Berbice.

Adrian Anamayah, one of the new faces on the PPP/C slate said the party has created an impeccable legacy on which it can be judged. He added that the massive turnout is testimony to the support the party has earned as a result of its policies and programmes.
