President urges voters to resist campaign of fear during Elections period-addresses Dundee, de Hoop residents

Presidential Candidate of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), Mr. Bharrat Jagdeo last evening told residents of Dundee, Mahaicony and De Hoop, Mahaica that efforts are continuing by criminal gangs to spread fear during the Elections period . Mr. Jagdeo was referring to the recent criminal activities involving the robbing of two Banks in Berbice and the killing of persons on the East Bank Demerara. He, however, noted that the struggle will continue and added that his Party has always endured struggles.

The President told hundreds of residents who had earlier welcomed him to the areas and anxiously awaited his address that efforts are also being made to reduce his Party’s votes at this year’s Elections. He said this was being done by other Opposition Political Parties, operating in the guise of smaller Parties formed to rescue the Nation from the two main Parties.

He referred to the members of the recently formed Alliance For Change (AFC) Party whom he said have suddenly become “Angels”, when only one year ago, one member who was then a member of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R) was one of the individuals vigorously lobbying against a Bill in Parliament that entailed deportees who had been sent back to Guyana for committing heinous crimes such as murders, reporting to the Police on a regular basis. This, he said, would have allowed for their activities to be monitored.

“Old habits die hard, and I think that the reason behind all these Parties is because they know that we will win the Presidency, so they want to bring our votes down to below 50 percent, so that we get less than 50 percent of seats in the Parliament.”

He cautioned residents that should his Party get less than 50 percent of the seats, then the other Parties can ensure that there is much more difficulty in Bills being Passed.

He reiterated that during the time when his Government had proposed the Passage of such a Bill, the Opposition had said that the document would infringe upon the Human Rights of the deportees.

“But…. What about your rights, the rights of your children?”, Mr. Jagdeo queried.

He noted that since the PPP/C has been in Office, there has been much development countrywide and this cannot be questioned, adding that his Party can campaign on its record of success.

“But we still have more work to do, and what I can promise you is more hard work.” He emphasised.

Advising voters on voting procedures, PPP/C Candidate Navin Chanderpal, who also addressed residents of both areas, told residents that at the last elections, many of the PPP/C suuporters’ votes were deemed null and void after they had voted incorrectly. He then advised them to ensure that they place their exes properly in the box of their choice so that their votes could be counted.
