-President Jagdeo

The People’s Progressive Party’s (PPP/C) Presidential candidate Bharrat Jagdeo said the last tenure of his Administration saw massive development which has characterised its leadership since its ascension to power in 1992.

He was at the time addressing a huge gathering assembled for a rally at Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, Region Five.

Among those present were Prime Ministerial candidate, Samuel Hinds, ppp/c Parliamentarian, Pauline Sukhai, Minister of Human Services and Social Security Bibi Shaddick, Minister of Health Dr. Leslie Ramsammy and Director of Regional Health Services, Dr. Bheri Ramsarran.

The incumbent Head-of-State said the party is approaching the 2006 Elections with much confidence as a result of its record in the last decade.

He noted that among the areas of development targeted in the last tenure were expansion and modernisation of the health sector.

In addition to construction and rehabilitation of healthcare facilities, focus has been placed on enhancing the quality and range of services being offered.

This he said includes cancer and diabetic treatment, heart surgery and enhancement of diagnostic capabilities within the sector.

The President added that his Party’s unparalleled record of sound and effective management is evident from the dramatic turn-around in the economy over the last decade, noting the reduction in foreign debt from US2.1B to $800M.

Prime Minister Hinds said the numerous developmental projects executed under the PPP/C administration are testimony to the tangible forms of progress attained during its tenure.

Ramsarran noted that the Party has restored Guyana to the level of accountability which makes it a respectable nation in the international community.

He referred to the return of audited accounts during the current Administration which were inactive during the PNC/R regime.

Sukhai noted that the expansion of infrastructure has not been confined to the Capital but has been extended to all corners of the country including the interior.

She noted that while plans are on-stream for the construction of the Berbice River Bridge and the resurfacing of the Demerara Harbour Bridge, a study is being conducted for the construction of the Takutu Bridge in Region Nine.

Region Five Chairmen Harrinarine Baldeo added that the Region has been a prime focus by the administration in the area of housing and other forms of development.

He explained that in addition to massive electrification and road works, more than 1500 house-lots have been issued in the Region within the last few years.

Cadogan, another candidate, noted that the PPP/C has done much for the advancement of youths and women.

He drew attention to the growing number of women holding high-profile positions in politics, legislature and other forms of law enforcement.
