PPP/C Pleased with Disciplined Forces voting arrangements

The PPP/C is pleased that all arrangements are in place by GECOM to facilitate the voting by members of the Disciplined Forces on Monday, August 21, 2006 in respect of the August 28, 2006 National and Regional Elections.

The Party feels that this will not only allow for heightened security on Elections Day but would also help in terms of confidence building in the entire elections process.

The Party notes with satisfaction that GECOM has taken a decision to count the votes cast by the Disciplined Forces with those cast on Elections Day in order to protect the integrity of voting preferences with respect to the Disciplined Forces.

In this regard, the Party wishes to assure the public in general and members of the Disciplined Forces in particular of its continued commitment to strengthen the Force both institutionally and in terms of working conditions and remuneration in order to effectively fight crime in the country should it win re-election in the upcoming poll.

The Party also pledges to improve the working conditions of those involved in the protection of our national security and our territorial integrity. This commitment found expression in substantial increases in the budgetary allocation to the security sector, which increased from $910M in 1991 to $7.5B in 2006.

The PPP/C has noted that the Disciplined Forces successfully maintained law and order at previous elections. We remain confident that they will succeed in maintaining the peace in these elections also.

The PPP/C wishes to take this opportunity to encourage each and every member of the Disciplined Forces to exercise their constitutional right to vote for the Party of their choice, a right which the PPP not only fought for and won for the Guyanese people but one which the Party fully respects.

The Party also takes this opportunity to call on all Guyanese to cooperate fully with the Disciplined Forces in the exercise of their duties at this time of political anxiety and tension and to desist from doing anything that could harm the atmosphere, tolerance and peace.

We are assured that there will be heightened presence and vigilance by the security forces during the election period and this would help to remove any fear.

The PPP/C wishes to announce that tomorrow, August 18 at 5:p.m. at the Umana Yana we will be launching our 2006 Elections Manifesto. The theme of our Manifesto is : “A Brighter Future for all Guyanese.” Our Manifesto, like previous ones, will outline our programme to continue progress, strengthen unity and modernise our nation to respond to changing domestic and external situation.
