DECISION TO STOP PPP/C AD BY VCT & WRHM
A VIOLATION OF MEDIA CODE

The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) is disturbed by the decision of VCT Ch 28 (owned by a PNCR Candidate) and WRHM Ch. 7 refusal to air an advertisement, titled, ‘The Great Pretender’.

This development is a clear breach of the Media Code of Conduct to which these entities have signed on. We view this measure as a naked attempt to muzzle the PPP/C’s message to the Guyanese electorate.

The advertisement – the Great Pretender - does not contain any material deemed to be a violation of any law or code of conduct. It merely reminds our people of the roles of political aspirants in certain past sordid events.

The decision by the two television stations seems to be politically-motivated. It is also a serious development and harms free, open and equal campaigning by these two media outfits.

This bully-tactic shows that the political personalities involved cannot respond to the facts. They have instead have used their partisan political influence to hide their less-than-decent past from the viewers of these two television channels.

We will ensure that the advertisement – the Great Pretenders - is made available to those television channels viewers and other Guyanese, and, as such, we will be immediately increasing the frequency of airing on all the other television stations.

The PPP/C also wishes to bring this disturbing development to the attention of the GECOM’s Media Monitoring Unit and the Independent Media Panel.
