Elections are going smoothly so far – PPP/C
From all reports the electoral process seems to be progressing well and it is expected that it will remain the same throughout the procedure. This view was expressed by General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), Donald Ramotar at a press conference held earlier today at the party’s headquarters, Freedom House.
“So far it has been going well. There have been no incidents to speak about, which we are extremely happy about and we hope that the situation will remain calm,” he said.
Ramotar pointed out that there was a large turnout at the polling stations early this morning and although the pace slowed-up by midday, it is expected to increase later in the afternoon.
The PPP/C General Secretary said there were some initial hiccups but nothing serious. He noted there were some reports of situations where some of the Party’s supporters’ names were not on the list in areas such as Crane and Lusignan but these reports were being investigated.
“At this point in time we cannot say if the situation is widespread but they are looking into these matters,” Ramotar said.
When asked about the media being prevented from coverage of the PPP/C Presidential Candidate, Bharrat Jagdeo casting his ballot, Executive Member of the Party, Robert Persaud said the PPP/C was not responsible and regrets the action.
He further explained that the Party was surprised that this occurred since the media was invited to cover the event.
“I was surprised because we invited the media. If we knew that was the arrangement we would not have invited the media. I am sure our Presidential Candidate has deep regrets,” Persaud said.
He pointed out that the Party made no attempts to interfere with the arrangement and the President subsequently came out and made himself available to the media although they were unable to capture the photographic moment of the President casting his vote.
However, the Presidential photographers were allowed and efforts were made to provide the footage to the other media houses.
Persaud also said that Commissioner of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Dr. Steve Surujbally indicated that he did not issue any directive that prevented the media from covering the event.
The Party is encouraging persons who have not voted as yet, to come out and exercise their franchise to ensure that everyone participates in the Elections.
