August 30, 2006
U.S. Embassy, Georgetown
Georgetown - The U.S. Embassy congratulates the people of Guyana for exercising their democratic franchise in a calm, responsible manner on August 28, 2006. The 23 U.S. Embassy personnel who participated within the OAS Observer Mission reported that the election day process went smoothly except for a few instances of disorganization that were not sufficient to affect the outcome. The Embassy applauds the tireless efforts of dedicated GECOM staff, polling station officials, party agents, and voters in carrying out the General and Regional Elections.
Now the focus turns to the election results. The Embassy encourages the electorate and contesting parties to exercise patience while awaiting the results of the elections and encourages all Guyanese to remember that in a democracy it is incumbent upon everyone to accept the outcome of the democratic process.
It is important to maintain a constructive and peaceful environment in the coming days. Political leaders have a special duty to exercise sound judgment during this period.
