We’ve worked hard, we’ve campaigned hard

…PPP/C welcomes victory

The electorate has overwhelmingly returned the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) to Office in a victory that matches the 1997 Elections results where the Party scored the largest number of seats in the National Assembly.

This victory was welcomed by the Party at its Freedom House headquarters, Robb Street this evening after the results were announced by Chief Election Officer Gocool Bodhoo. Presidential Candidate Bharrat Jagdeo and Prime Ministerial Candidate Samuel Hinds, Executives of the Party and other members and supporters greeted the news with joy as the results unveiled that the PPP/C has scored a seat in every administrative region.

“We have worked hard over the years. We have campaigned hard over the months and our work is vindicated by the results,” Mr. Jagdeo said after the results were announced.

The PPP/C scored a at least one seat in every Geographical Constituency, as well as 21 on the National Top Up List. It acquired 36 of the 65 seats in the National Assembly.

“I am very pleased that we have, since the return of democracy to Guyana, the highest number of seats in Parliament, matching the results of 1997. That is another big success for us. I want to thank the many people who helped us in various ways to achieve this victory…without their hard work and support we would have never achieved these results,” he said.

The Party scored 183,887 of the 338,839 valid votes, which represents 54.6 percent.

And reflecting on the 2006 Elections campaign which lasted for less than two months for most of the Parties, Mr. Jagdeo congratulated the Parties for the ‘clean campaign.’

“I think on the whole people stayed away from issues that are taboo for us in Guyana that we should never allow to divide our people in Guyana – issues of race and religion and I want to thank them for that maturity,” he said.

Commendations were also at hand for the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) for the efficiency with which the Elections were conducted and to the security forces “for their incredible work in ensuring that our people felt safe when they went out to cast their votes. So I think it is a collective, national effort and we should all take credit for this,” he said.
