STABROEK NEWS’ MISREPRESENTATION
OF PPP/C LINDEN RALLY

The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) this past weekend held two successful rallies in Linden and Georgetown. We wish to thank the many thousands who attended and participated in these events which are indications of the show growing strength of and support for the PPP/C.

Our Rally in Linden, despite threats and intimidation meted out to our activists, and the act of provocation by the PNCR/OG to hold its rally at the same time and date in Linden after it learnt of our event, could not prevent more than 3000 Lindeners and Region Ten residents from attending. The thousands sent a strong message of growing support for the PPP/C.

We are disappointed, but not surprised by the Stabroek News report today on the PPP/C Linden Rally which misleadingly describes our rally as a “gathering of around 300 persons.” While in its report on the PNCR/OG rally, the Stabroek News refers to that gathering as a “large crowd.”

The PNCR/OG on its Nation Watch programmed on Sunday, August 6 aired on Channel 9 made the same false report that only 300 attended our rally. The PNCR/OG must have been so disappointed by the large turnout to the PPP/C Rally that it launched a misinformation campaign about the attendance at the rally. It seems as if the Stabroek News is merely repeating the Opposition’s campaign of lies and misinformation during this elections period.

Today’s report is merely a repeat of the same malicious and reckless journalism exhibited by the Stabroek News in its August 27 issue on our massive Nomination Day parade. The Stabroek News in that bout of pavement journalism accused the PPP/C of paying persons $3000 to participate in the Nomination Day activity. As observed by the Independent Refeering Panel of GECOM, that report was reckless and unsubstantiated. The Stabroek News is yet to either retract that unfair attack or apologise to the PPP/C.

We have done it and we can do it again, bring the people out in Linden in large numbers.

The Opposition and its allies in sections of the media are worried about the growing support the PPP/C has been receiving in all communities, including traditional so-called opposition strongholds.

We can only conclude by their recent behaviour that they are getting desperate hence their campaign of fabrication and misrepresentation.

The PPP/C will not be distracted as we mobilize the Guyanese people for another victory with a greater majority.

The PPP/C calls on the Independent Media Panel, International observers and international donor missions and other stakeholders to pay attention to this kind of reckless reporting, abuse of press freedom and violation of the media code of conduct by Stabroek News and others which are designed to ridicule the PPP/C.

August 7, 2006.
